Swap in a zf-5. I had a superduty 7.3 and wasted money on a built auto which failed right after i sold it thankfully. zf-5, single mass flywheel and a southbend or valair clutch. Than be done with it.

Which is what i am going to do on my truck when the auto@$&^ fails.

personal preference i think , both are good , E40D will last depending on your driving habits and mods you have done , they don't just fail

how many miles did the trans have on it? what mods were done to the truck? did he have a gauge on it? the only thing that kills E40D's are heat and power

A properly built e4od is one of the best autos on the road. A built auto will/should cost you around $3k, which will get you a med-heavy build. A ZF is always a good choice but you could easily have just as much into a swap depending on the condition of the zf you pick up. I paid $1000 for my complete swap minus clutch. A smf and decent clutch will run you $800-1000. A built auto will be faster as well.
