Coolant Loss

I've got a 94.5 PSD that's losing coolant. It lost almost two gallons over the past 3000 miles. I can sometimes smell coolant right when I turn the heater on, but it's been that way for a year or so. The coolant isn't in the oil (Oil is still clean and black), and I'm not finding any coolant leaks. The only other issue that I've seen is that when it's very cold (I noticed it the other day when it was about 5 below, and this morning when it was about ten) I can sometimes see a small amount of vapor from the tailpipe when I accelerate. Normal with a gas engine, but I thought it was strange in a diesel. Does anybody have any idea where the coolant might be going? I kind of considered blown head gasket, but that should mean combustion gasses in the coolant, right?

i wondered about that too after i thought some about it. I wonder if there would be any way to tell with a pressure tester. I was going to get one tomorrow and pump it up and see if i can find the leak. Pinch off the heater hoses and see if i can isolate that. The thing that got me is how much i lose.

Well I guess that's better than a blown head gasket. I've done the injectors, but never messed with the cups. How bad are they to do? I know rosewood sells the tool...does anybody happen to have it that might loan it?
