"Junked up" how? Black? That would be injector o-rings.

That kind of smoke is usually incomplete burn. Is it hard to start? That would suggest a glow plug issue.

the smoke turned out to be blueish. it looked white in the dark with a flashlight. but it cleared up and the new owner picked it up. mods can delete this thread

Not sayin' it's not a good truck. Prob. just needs glow plugs / relay. Maybe the dude will get on one of these sites and we can help him out.
