Where is my ABS?

I am new to the OBS life. I purchased a ’97 about four months ago and have been really pleased. My OBS is a ’97 F250 c/c short box w/145,000 and is bone stock. It looks great and runs great except for when it comes to the brakes.

It does not take much at all to get the brakes to lock up. I could be rolling from a dead stop and hit the brakes and we will slide on a wet road. I have already had a few close encounters when it was raining so I need to get it fixed.

My question is I am not sure if my OBS came with ABS and if it did why is it not working? Can anyone help me identify the ABS on this vehicle? My ABS light does not come on when I start the truck and I have checked all fuses (I think). Thanks.

first off,. sounds like you definatly have a problem. just because the "dummy" light on the dash doesnt come on, doesnt mean there isnt a problem. what i would do is take your wheels off one at a time and give the brakes a good look over, great place to start. a visual check of the brakes may solve your problem. good luck

Your abs lines with be a extra hose next to your brake line. Like Big K said, OBS only have rear wheel abs systems. At least that I've seen.

Thanks for the info I will see what I can find. When I said the ABS light doesn't come on. What I ment is that is does not light up when I turn my key forward just before strating the truck, like all the other dash lights come on for a few seconds. I just thought it was abnormal. In most vehicles all dash lights come on prior to start. That is why I thought my problem might be in the ABS system. I am not sure if the truck even has ABS to begin with. Thanks for the tips.

We do not have ABS of any kind what we have is a rabs valve that when it thinks the rear wheels are locking up it will dump all the pressure to the rear brakes! Stupid idea that just makes the truck leap forward. Only fix is to install rear disk brakes, I don't know why but with them the rears will not lockup and no mater how hard you stomp the brakes in the rain it just stops.

What would having the rear drums converted into disc brakes cost? Would there be any other draw backs to the conversion?
