Aftermarket intake for the vans- something along the lines of the 6637?

My dad has a 2003 E350 with the 7.3L, and just found a crack in the airbox. A factory replacement is over $400, and he isn't real keen on spending the money for another factory box, which the dealer mechanic said are known for breaking. My first thought was the 6637 mod, like I've got in my F350, but apparently that filter won't fit in the vans? He lives 4 hours away, so I can't look at it myself, or test fit my filter. I've searched around and can't seem to find any aftermarket setups, and I'm yet to find any cone type filters that will fit definitely fit in a van engine bay. Is anyone familiar with a good way to replace the factory airbox in the vans?

I don't have a link, but a while back someone on here put an intercooler in and e 350, and ended up putting the intake inside, built a custom surround for it, and drew air in from the side I will look for the link.

Edit : here's the link - Water/air intercooler E350 7.3 diesel
lot of work and not a lot of instructions, but its and idea if your dad has some fab skills.
