Axle Question

Just a quick question, might be pointless but nevertheless... Is there a difference between a sterling 10.5 and 10.25? a lot of the times I see them used interchangeably , and I'm thinking of getting a limited slip/locker for my truck and would like to be 100% sure before i commit to anything. Thanks

This comes up quite frequently....

You have a 10.5 Sterling,...but....when buying lockers,..and sometimes gear-sets,..you actually get 10.25 parts,...but don't stress...because they give to the correct bearings to make it work....it is VERY common

One of the main reasons im asking is because on This site Theres two separate categories for 10.25, and 10.50, and theres a lot more choice in the 10.25 selection. I don't really know what's the best choice (lockers, limited slip, ect). I'm going to be doing some light off-roading with a 4x4 club here where I live, and snow plowing in the winter time, and would like to be able to get as much bite as possible when It's needed. You seem to know a good deal about these set-ups. What the best bang for the buck?

If you are talking about the 1996 in your sig, you have a Sterling 10.25 rear axle....Superduties have a 10.5" ring gear, hence, Sterling 10.5

^^^ I missed that part...I turn the "sigs" off...I think they are too much to read...so I don't know what people have...lol

i guess that's what ya get for assuming.


As for the best locker....it reall depends on the application....you have to be as specific as possible for us to recommend something.


where you live, weather conditions, is price an issue, etc etc etc etc

My bad too, i just assumed that everyone could see my sig lol. No harm no foul.

As for information, i live in Nova Scotia, Canada, where it snows like a witch, and freezes solid in the winter time, and wetter then hello in the spring. As i mentioned before, I'm also going to do some LIGHT, keyword LIGHT off-roading (i went with a buddy who did said trail in an explorer whose 4wd was non-functional, so I feel pretty safe) And in the winter time I'm going to use the truck to plow snow.

As for price, I don't wanna have to take out a loan to buy the thing, but i know they aren't cheap in any means. All i may need is a posi for the back, but i don't wanna buy one, and find out its not doing what I need. Or buy the best their is, only to waste the full potential of it by not using it. I've always gone by the motto 'Research is your friend'

OK...now I have a real good idea of what you NEED....but even then...it's my opinion.

You need a selectable locker,....now it's up to you what you WANT.

There are a couple different choices,...AIR, ELECTRIC, etc..

Once you chose which one you want,...then you have to chose which brand....lol

You can use a 10.5 in place of the 10.25. With the Trac-Lok 10.5, you can crack the case in half and install more clutches. This preloads the clutches and the Trac-Lok will be more tighter.

I hate my 10.25 Trac-Lok. I acts like a peg leg. I tried the dragging the E-brake; that used to work but not anymore.

There is more to the swap but its easy. Do a search, you will find the info.

I'm looking for a Trac-Lok 10.5 for my swap.
