belt tensior problem

Well I noticed today my belt was squeaking so I went to advance auto bought a new belt and put it on. Well I started the truck and noticed the belt was not moving at all. so I took it out and reinstalled the old belt, and the exact same thing of not moving either. I did notice some slack in the belt. Is the tensior bad?

I havent had this problem yet, but I have heard it is very common on these trucks to have belt tensioner problems. A friend of mine has 397k on his truck and he has put 4 of them on since new. It seems one about every 100,000k.

Double-check the routing. Did the tensioner spring put up some resistance when you wound it up to remove the belt? When you release the tensioner spring with the belt installed, does the tensioner move to the same position that it does when the belt is off? When you push on the belt and notice the slack, does the tensioner pulley move?
