Buying from just photos

There are a couple trucks I am looking at online. Some of them over 1000 miles away. Is it wise to buy a truck without going to look at it first based off photos? I generally like to see what i am getting into. I can fly to most of the locations one way fairly cheap.

Would it be better to have a truck shipped or just drive it home?

Some of the locations would be in excess of 24 hours driving.

My work bought a truck sight unseen and I can tell you its a BAD idea. The carfax was clean and I think carfax is a scam in general. If an accident isn't reported or claimed it doesn't show up. Basically the truck was a 2010 3500 dually ram with 12k miles on it. Looked so good in the photos clean etc. Even had the "lemon squad" go look at it. The only thing they noted was a whistling from the door. Low and behold the whole passenger side of the truck had been cleaned off. Runs in the clear that were buffed overspray on the antenna mount aftermarket headlight. I wouldn't do it.....

I pretty well know that it is best to see something in person before purchasing. Looks like so far whatever I end up with is going to be a long drive home.

Not enough vehicles for sale in my area.

What other sites are good to find vehicles on other than autotrader?

i bought one off ebay (ie i had to buy it) from photos and talking to the seller. i knew there were going to be problems, i could see rust that was poorly fixed and rust that wasn't fixed, but for what i paid it wasn't a huge issue. the seller was up front and honest about most things. there were a few things he didn't disclose, but i'm happy with the truck. drove 6 hours each way for it

my other truck, used to be my father's he found it on auto trader. talked to the guy on the photo and looked and photos, figure it was worth a drive. drove 6 hours each way for it. but got to drive it and look it over before we committed to buying it.

bottom line is if it is in driving distance (to me that is 500ish miles one way) i would say drive and look. or you can look around on CL, auto trader, etc before you go somewhere on vacation and buy a truck and drive it home. my father has done that as well.

A good idea that my buddy did was have the guy sign something stating that he would put a deposit down and if the truck was not as stated and fraudulent to the ad he would be instantly refunded his deposit, but was committed to buy the vehicle otherwise or forfeit the deposit

Another option is maybe post up the location that some of the trucks are in and see if there may be a forum member close by. I can only speak for myself, but if you were looking for a truck that was close to me, I'd be happy to look it over for you and report back...

Anyone in or near Sioux Falls South Dakota? Next2new auto has a 1996 f350 in green with just over 100k miles.

Another place in Richmond VA has a 1995 with 250k miles that is lifted. It is at Davis Auto Sales.

Thanks in advance.
