How know have 200 amp Alternator

My battery light started flickering at night around town.

When get on open road and revs are up light goes off.

Also noticed the battery voltage guage swinging from 8 to normal.

Tested battery and they are good.

Monitor says charging system failure.

So I started looking at new alternators and see some OBS 7.3 have 200 amp alternator.

How do I know which I have or does it matter?

Meaning can I just buy a 200 amper?

I have the 8 rib belt.

March 97 build date.

The right (passenger) positive battery post has 3 big wires coming off it.

Also any suggestions on which brand alternator to buy?

I love my truck and plan keep long time

Thank U,

Dennis

A mush cheaper way to go about it is to remove the Alternator and take it to a electric motor shop. They will rewind and repair your Alternator to almost any strength you want (that will fit into the body). I think a electric motor shop can squeeze 220 Amps worth of windings into the stock housing. High Amperes like mine are 100's $ and are not normally needed by most people. Just because you have 200 amps on tap doesn't mean that the system is using it. The system will only use what it needs.
