low oil pressure?

hi all,

this is my first post so take it easy on me......

i'm a 25 yr old certified welder, i own a small fab/repair shop. the welding rig i have is a '95 f-350 w/ 7.3 powerstroke, no mods (4" exhaust is on layaway), flat bed with a lincoln weldanpower g-8000 welder/ generator. this is my first diesel. here's my ?'s p.s. my expertise is in external combustion engines (steam engines)

where should the the needle point on the oil pressure gauge? mine will be about center when i first start it, then after a 10 minute warm up i get in to go then needle is down in the "n o" on the normal range and pretty much stays down there, even on the freeway. sometimes it will dip below the "n". is this about average for a rig with 250k miles on it?

someone told me there is a bypass valve on the oil pump and they sometimes stick open, is this a possibility? other said it may be a faulty sensor....

how can i do an oil pressure test? a freind has a scanner but is slow to help unless there is money exchanging hands (from mine to his).

i had a check engine light once, pulled over and turned it off, fired it back up and the light was off.

btw, great forum, lots of good info here.

Jason
