engine swap/rebuild

okay so ice blew a hole in my block a couple years ago. the truck has been parked un-diagnosed since our 2nd child was born. I just got around to making some light repairs to try to get her back on the road and discovered the cracked block. I picked up a nearly complete motor out of a 99. They guy did not know anything about the engine except that it has ~120k on it.

As nice as a complete rebuild would be it just isn't in the budget right now. ideally i will be swapping the smaller parts from the old motor and doing a straight swap to save time.

So my question is this. Where do i start with testing this new motor to see if it's worth dropping in without a rebuild?

Sorry to hear about your block. Have the same problem myself. Gotta love previous owners. Anyway i found another motor that was already disassembled and will be putting in new piston rings and main bearings. Maybe have the compression checked. I'd start there
