Rear Drum Brake Problems

So, I spent about a week replacing everything on my rear drum brakes. I replaced everything except for the parking cable. The problem I am having is when I am backing my boat into the water, the drum brakes don't want to hold at all and I am raping the shifter column when I put it back in drive. I am tired of this. I spent almost $300 on my rear brakes and wish I would've just put disc brakes on it. I tightened the shoes tight on the drum before I put them on. I reversed hard. It seemed like it held once but then got adjusted again. Any more recommendations. Anybody trying to sell some disc brakes?

When you back up it will only adjust tighter unless you put them together backwards. Try tightening them down again, if they become loose after backing up, swap the adjuster from right to left.

The "star wheel" should ratchet (past the self-adjusting lever) when rotating in the "tightening" direction. If the lever is installed correctly, you will need to manually push it off the start wheel to rotate the star wheel in the "loosening" direction. Cheers!

Can't be much worse than not working at all. Are there any other options besides brakes?

Line locks? They worked great on my floats.
