what trans fluid for zf5??

Hey guys when this is my first post here so I'll tell about my truck and plans first then ask the question... lol. But I have a 96 f250 rclb 4x4 5speed, 184,335 miles, CAI 4 inch exhaust and since the bed was rusty I put a flatbed for a single wheel on it. My plans for the truck are to do gauges, a ts 6 pos chip with tunes from beans or something like that, then eventually do either baby swamps or rosewoods stage 1s... Okay now that's over when I got the truck bout 3 months ago I went ahead and changed trans fluid and put in dex merc atf. That's what it called for. The trans and t-case look very new, like it is still very clean and shifts good and all that. I just wanted to make sure I had the right stuff in it. I'm not sure if its just mine, but if I lug the truck any at all it is making an awful grinding. I heard they are noisy transmissions but I didn't know if that was normal..

96 f250 rclb flatbed, 4x4 5spd, Custom CAI, 4 inch exhaust, and soon when I make more money, gauges, ts 6 pos with tunes, baby swamps or rosewoods stage 1s.

Is it synthetic? ZF calls for synth in their tranny when it's bolted to a diesel engine.
