Am I expecting too much from my 96?

96 F350 quad-cab dually. Stock except for a US gear 2 speed aux trans and maybe a US gear chip? Just got back from a 1000 mi round trip to NC towing my Land Rover on a 2 axle trailer (~8000 lbs gross). Got around 12 mpg @ 60mph. Mileage doesn't bother me as much as a seemingly lack of power. On 80 percent of normal highway driving, dropping it out of OD would get me up the hills at speed. Anything more, especially a few steeper grade hills would cause it to bog down horribly. Normal? I have a DP to install and am going to do the air filter mod this summer. Without modding the exhaust more than the DP, would a custom tunes chip by itself get me up the steeper hills any faster?
Thanks - Bill

Yes it would, but I would recommend an intercooler as well to keep the egt's down, and gauges to monitor it all

Just finished a 6.0 trans cooler install. Intercooler was lower on the list. With guages to monitor things, was hoping to get away with a custom tunes chip to give it a little extra oomph.

That question makes no sence, I cannot in good faith say get custom tunes before gauges, I've had mine up to 1400+ with an ic and custom tunes, I do tow in extreme, but I WATCH my gauges

What question are you referring to? I stated that I would get the gauges and the chip at the same time.

Ah. Also, hadn't thought of it before, but when the downpipe goes in, I'm going to gut the cat.

You might have boost leaks, exhaust leaks pre turbo, low fuel pressure, worn injectors, low injector control pressure, and a number of things.
