Question Spooling??

I've heard the term spooling a lot and just wondering what that is or means? I'm thinking maybe it's when the turbo kicks in when cruzing down the interstate and makes all that loud noise like my "95" 7.3 does. It also sounds the same way in the morning when just started and I go a few miles, then the noise stops. Also wondering what's a boost gauge good for? Thanks ahead of time for answering my questions.

spooling is when your turbo is gaining momentum when you are at low speed and accelerating.

a boost gauge tells you the psi of air the turbo is pushing into the engine

That noise you hear is probably the fan engaging, or possibly the back pressure valve closing.
