4WD Woes

Yesterday, after a new gift of a foot-and-a-half of snow, I ventured out.

I found that my 4x4 high would not work.

After backyard exam, I find:

4x4 dash light doesn't always go out when in 2 high.

Sometimes does not come on in 4x4 high detent.

4x4 light always goes out in neutral.

4x4 lo light does not always come on.

But 4wd Lo always works, regardless of light on/off.

To reach 4wd low, or come out of it to neutral, I need to unload the driveline by placing main box in neutral.

What gives here? The linkage is a bit stiff, and feels sloppy, especially in 4x4 high (did a lot of "hunting" with lever, never got 4high.

TIA for any ideas !

Also, fearing the worst, how can I tell if I have a BW 1356 or 4407?

I'm As suming that since I don't have a 4x4 knob on the dash, I don't have one of those motors.

Dang, you learn somthin' new about your truck most every day (whether you want to or not!).
