OD on or off towing a popup camper?

I have a 1996 f250 7.3 Club Cab: We'd like to get a popup tent trailer. So when checking the manual, as far as I could decider, it said to leave OD on when towing, which is contrary to what I have known when I had Suburbans and towed a popup camper. We always pushed the little button in taking it out of OD mode. Anyway, a popup is nothing for a 7.3 (3500 lbs or so) so I just leave the OD button on the end of the shifter alone and tow away?

Any help appreciated...especially since the end cap of the shifter came off and sometimes the OD button works and sometimes it doesn't.

Basically you just use the OD on/off button if it's hunting for gears or if you just wanna downshift. Just keep it in it's happy range 1750-2100 RPM and you're good.
