True OBS Stroker?

Hey guys.

I am trying to find a new truck for my dad. So if anyone has a Powerstoke for sale please let me know. But back to what i started. I was wondering how you can tell a true powerstroke? Or is it pretty obvious when you look under the hood? I have found a couple 94's but my dads wants a powerstroke, and not a turbo diesel? May be a stuipid question, but i am not sure how to tell. Haven't ever looked at the two trucks to see the differences. thanks for the help.

Ummmm, well lets start off with the basics. A Powerstroke IS a turbo diesel!!!!! If its a diesel, and its a Ford, 95 and newer, its a Powerstroke. About mid year 94 was when the Powerstroke was released. Typically it has a plastic cover over the center of the engine that covers the turbo. It says "Direct Injection" on the sides and I think its somethin like "7.3L Turbo Diesel" in the middle. Somethin like that. The turbo is in the center of the engine between the heads. I dont know where its at on a 7.3 non-Powerstroke. Theres different injection pumps, but I dont know how to describe them to ya. I could look under the hood and tell which is which though. Those are some quick visual clues...the real PSD-edumacated guys can help out alot better than I can.

alright, well thanks for the help. I knew that came out in 94.5. But with this day and age you can't trust people. So i just wanted a sure way of knowing. i know my way around the 7.3 powerstroke pretty well, just never messed with the turbo diesels to know the differences between the two exactly. thanks again for the help tho.

Here's a couple pics. The 94 and before IDI turbos just say "Ford Turbo" on the plastic cover. The Powerstrokes say "Direct Injection Turbo Diesel."

The 94.5 models that have Powerstrokes don't say Powerstroke on the truck. They just have a little tiny badge that says "Turbo Diesel" under the F250,F350, etc. badge.

'94 autos should have the IDI, and manuals could have either. If you want an auto, mark all '94's off the list.
