97 powerstroke crate or upgrades

I have a 97 powerstroke that was a work truck pulling gooseneck trailers eveyday 10,000lbs 100 miles. I got it around 160,000 miles now it has
219000 miles on it. I replaced the auto 180,000 miles with billet converter and glow plugs at 215,000 miles pickup pump under turbo replaced.
I haven't done anything else to it.
I was planning on putting $3,000-$5,000 into it for replacing parts and mods.
Is their to many miles on it to put the mods on it. I was thinking of getting a compression test before I start the build up. I would hate to put the money into it and the motor then it would have to be rebuilt.
Should I get a stock crate engine or put $3000-$5000 into my engine.

You bring up an age old question right there. The compresion test wouldn't hurt, but the big thing with a PSD is if it has been maintained. If the oil has been changed on a regular basis then you should be able to see 300k out of it fairly easy. But on the up side, if the motor gets too weak then you can swap the mods you have done onto a new motor/truck.

As far as essetials it's hard to say, as a rule you should always carry a spare cam postion sensor and the tools to replace it, they are prone to failure and can leave you stranded without warning. Good news is the price of them dropped from $200 or so to $35.

For mods you can get as wild as you want to but this is a good start
Guages (pyro, boost and tranny temp) Price depends on how fancy you want
DIY stage 1 injectors $225+ any additional parts
3" down pipe $100 or so
Exhaust system: again price varies
Tony wildman custom tunes: price depends on how many positions you want.
