OBD Code Reader

On Board Diagnostic Code Reader
Anyone care to recommend one for our 7.3 engines.
It would be great if the same instrument also applied
to a 2008 Impala and a 97 Saturn, but it's for the diesel
that I'm serious about.

I never had luck with generic obd2 scanners. You can get one for 20-30$ for your cars. For my 96 7.3l I had to buy a vinlocked superchips programmer. I think it cost me like $50? It will pull and read all the codes. Even the trans and the ones that dont set the CEL.
Ebay SUPERCHIPS MAX MICRO TUNER 1705.
The cheap ones are more then likely vinlocked. Meaning the program was left in a vehicle and never re-flashed back into the programmer... Ie' stolen or wrecked trucks. But for pulling codes it's perfect.

Look into getting a snap on mt2500, u can pick them up for under 500 with a good amount of accessories. That unit should be able to read your other cars with updates from snap on. U will need a high end scanner to read codes off your 7.3 .... another option for ya is an auto enginuity which is a lap top program that plugs into your truck and will read codes, data log, and show u digital gauges to diagnose your problems. They sell different disks for each brand of vehicle (ford, chevy, chrysler) but each disk is like 400 bucks plus the price of your lap top.

I have Auto Enginuity, takes a little bit to figure out how to use it, but it is fairly straight forward for pulling codes. Plus all the other stuff you can do with it (that I have absolutely no clue how to use.....yet).
