96 supercab !

going to check out this truck out this afternoon. price is
fair for the miles. state maintained.

anything that i need to look for, that would stand out on
a good once over, besides leaks, cel, etc...? anyone local
to austin that wants to ride over and check it with me ?

been on cummins forums for quite a few years, but know
nothing about the strokes. is this year model non i/c ?

Check out transmission with usual.. burnt fluid, color, smell, has the trans been replaced? Check manifold bolt for replacement or missing, if they are then the truck has seen high EGT's. Check for motor blow-by by placing motor oil fill cap upside down on the VC hole and make sure it doesnt blow it off with pressure, a little vapor/smoke is ok. If u have aviablility to a scanner like a snap on MT2500 or auto engunity take it with you to check high pressure oil pressure, duty cycles, and do an injector contibution test and buzz test. If not just check for excessive smoke on start. Check for exhaust leaks on up pipes in back of engine on the manifolds to the turbo. (No deal braker, just a bagin chip). If u want to take some tools with ya, remove the orange boot to the turbo and check for turbo shaft play. It will have a little as they are oil bearings, but the blades should never touch the housing.check to see the condition of the compresser wheel too. (Again no deal breaker) check for oil leaks and fuel leaks in the valley and in the rear of the engine.... prolly missing stuff but thats a start

thank you sir - ill take a few small tools with me and check
the turbo shaft play for sure. tranny check is also on the
to do list, as is the blow by check. anything else, year
specific, that i should look for, with being a powerstroke ?

HPOP, when has it been replaced being that high of milage.

just went and checked it.

i asked about the fuel filters, oil filter and pump. dealer
guy had no clue if the pump was replaced. it did have
some blow by, but not even close to enough to move
the oil cap. it did have more than my 92 12v cummins though.
brakes felt a little soft. a/c and heat worked, no major leaks,
although the engine was a tiny bit oily, to be expected on
a truck with a quarter million miles on it. plan on making an
offer for $3800 and see what happens. really clean inside.
drove smooth, no pulls left or right. pretty good get up and go
for being 215 non i/c hp .....
