97 Loss of power (buddy's truck)

It has no power, idles fine, fires right up fine. Have to have it to the floor to get it up to 30mph with it blowing black smoke. The only other problem he has had with was over summer, it was only running on 4 and just like that it fixed itself going down the hwy.

sounds like the turbo to me, was there a bang before it started doing this? any soot under the hood too?

That's what i was thinking it could be, he's up north with. Is there a way to check the turbo.

Take the intake tube off, check the fins and push/pull on the shaft/lift it up and down
