Will a 97 f250 gas Starter fit on a Diesel?

My starter is going out and I need some help with what to get. The starter I am taking out has an open bendix that looks likes it pops out then retracts. The starter I found is one with a dome cap or cover on the end over the bendix and the bendix does not retract. Will that harm the flywheel in any way or anything else?

Your rig may not strart... Diesel engines need MUCH more torque from the strarter than gassers...
