1994 Powerstroke or not?
I am looking at an old 1994 Ford 1 ton with a 7.3L diesel engine and I don't think there is a turbo... the VIN engine code is M, and it was built in Ontario. Is that a PSD? If not what are the thoughts on that engine? and I should stay away? It has about 196k on the truck, it runs great but not as much power as my friends 5.9 cummins.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated. |

Some 94's had the turbo. If it does have the turbo it could be direct injected or Powerstroke engine. If its not the direct injected or idi its not the powerstroke

Actually I think Im wrong 94 is when they went to direct injection and I believe 93's had turbo's also.

Easy way to tell, if it has an injection pump, its NOT a powerstroke

all 94's had turbo whether or not they were classified as "powerstroke". it was until about half way thru the year that Ford switched to the powerstroke engine.
yes, as a generally statement, the diesel engine that Fords has used, doesn't have as much power as the 5.9 Cummins that Dodge used. but the rest of the vehicle more than made up for it. for the last thirty or so years, Ford has had the best in class towing. that said, i wouldn't worry to much about the stock power difference. |

is there a quick way to identify an "injection pump", I am new to diesels. If it's not a 289or 351 I am a bit out of luck

if its a powerstroke itll say it under the F250 badge

the injection pump would be the square box thingy with all of the metal tubes going to the heads (1 for each injector)
