94.5-95 are powerstrokes. Early 94's are turbo diesels which are an indirect injected 7.3 diesel. The idi's don't have a computers so you can't chip them and they have less power

I understand....to be more clear why did Ford label the 96 Power strokes and not the 94.5-95. I know the 94.5 are direct injection just trying to understand the "labeling"

In 94 or 94.5 (not sure when they started), but there were 3 7.3s: 1) N/A IDI 7.3, 2) Tubro Charged IDI 7.3, and 3) the Powerstroke. I believe the "turbo diesel" was the turbo charged IDI.

Ford started labeling Power Stroke in 96. All DI's prior was labeled Turbo Diesel. Thanks for the thoughts so far

i believe the only difference between the 94.5-97 psd is they changed something on the block in 97 just cant remember what it was

I think there are some differences in the hpops, like a drain back valve, I remember reading that somewhere. There is a difference in the blocks in 97s, I saw that somewhere, can't rememeber now though.

There a bunch of small differences between the 94.5, 95, 96, and 97 (not counting the late 96 and 97 California versions which got the split-shot injectors) . They are all PSDs (all are 7.3L Direct Injected Turbo Diesels that use the Hydraulically Actuated Electronically Controlled Unit Injectors (HEUI)). The 94's , no matter if they were Turbo IDIs or the PSD, were labeled as turbodiesels (no Powerstroke badges). 95-97's all got the PSD badging. Go to the "7.3L DIT Anthology" section of "this document" for more information. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Both of our '95s have PowerStroke badges, and are referred to as such in the owner's manual and diesel supplement.
