97 intermittent issue

Not mine but my nieghbors and thought I would do some research for him. As stated it's a 97 with 180k on the clock. Manual trans, 4x4.

What's going on is the truck will run fine, then all of a sudden bog down and start clattering like there is air getting in the fuel, pull off the side of the road and shut the truck down. Wait for a couple of minutes then fire it up and it's all good again.

Last year he pulled a 5th wheel 170 miles one way with no issue. On his return trip the truck acted up 5 times, all within 20 miles of each other.

It is setting a check engine light but we don't know what it is yet.

Thoughts, suggestions?

I would get it scanned and see what code is being set. Otherwise maybe do a good inspection of the sensor wiring connections, and the fuel bowl wiring harness. Cheers!

If it's clattering, timing might be off. Timing, as in SOI.
Try a CPS.
Then UVCHs.
