Truck camper use
Recently bought a truck camper that weighs 2750 dry and is quite tall and 9.5 ft long.
the first haul with it was less than satisfactory. I have listed a few concerns that you all can hash through and give some advice on hopefully. the first problem I had was my cab lights getting creamed every time I hit a dip or wowie (technical term) in the road. I took off the lenses for the rest of the trip. I will delete the cab lights no biggie there. I dont want the camper any higher as the result of spacers. My Gear Vendor (plus stock 4.11 final) worked beautifully on the level, but even the slightest incline required me to turn it off because the lower RPMs was not producing enough boost to keep me rolling and EGTs were getting over 1300. this was about 70 mph by the way. is there a better turbo arrangement than stock that is not too expensive? a local shop in Salt Lake said I could get a smaller turbine housing to get better boost at lower rpms for just a few hundred... but Im guessing my EGTs will still be a problem until I get an IC (see where this is going??? haha) my last concern is having SRW, what is all of your thoughts about appropriate tires... I want 10 ply rated and want to run them at 80psi obviously, but what brands do you folks recommend? for the price. any experience, please. Im getting helper airbags installed and have frame mounted tie downs, but there is still some uncomfortable sway Id like to reduce. any experience here is greatly appreciated. |

to add to my weak-a*s signature ...
I do have Water - Meth I installed the high pressure AirDog system and regulate my rails at about 45-50 psi. fully deleted OEM fuel system. the PO installed a giant air filter that inhales underhood ultra hot air... Im sure this inst helping... any input here on a cold air system is appreciated. I have my chip set to "towing" via Edge Programmer. other than that the truck is fully stock. thanks again in advance for your thoughts. |

your edge is you problem, get a custom tuned 6 position chip, the edge programmer is horrible on these trucks in my personal experience, you egt's will be even higher with a smaller exhaust housing, and the intercooler will help a huge amount, the gear vendor is actually not meant for towing btw,
as well, good luck with your quest, btw you can get a chip with less than 6 positions as well for less coin, like the super chip gold and a custom burn from certain tuners

Ive got pretty heavy W/M delivery above about 12 PSI, 225 cc/min, so I go through it quickly. I do see anywhere from 100-150 degrees drop when its running.
so what chip do you guys recommend? BTW I have a five speed. also any good cold air kits? Tires anyone? or should I start a seperate thread? |

Check Rickson online for 19.5's. Good tire/rim setup for a srw truck like yours. Also rv.net has a camper section that is of help for tire selection. Everyone there is gonna tell you your over weight though. Haha

look up the 6637 air filter mod, huge help there, and as far as chips i have tony wildman custom tunes and i love them, there is also gearhead, DP, swamps, etc etc, all good from what i hear, but my TW chips blows the edge tuner out of the water 10 out of 10 times in 200 different ways lol, good luck

You can shim under the camper to raise it a bit. This is not uncommon. A sheet of plywood may be enough to clear the cab lights.
