400hp OBS?

So I just got me a 1996 F-350 7.3L and it's bone stock. Is it possible to get 400hp/800tq out of these engines without dropping a load of money into it? I already have gauges, and I'm going to install a 4" exhaust, open up the intake, ts 6 pos chip, built tranny and t/c. I see most people change out the hpop and injectors. Is that about all I need to make this kind of hp?

Will an hpop off a SD bolt on and service my needs?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, and great site!

SD HPOP and a set of stage 2's should get you to 400hp on a stock turbo, but it won't be to happy.

FWIW overall i have roughly $2000 in my injectors, chip, and HPOP(bought another motor), and another $3300ish in a trans. Haven't dynoed or re-burnt the chip yet but i should be at the 400hp mark.

That's what I wanted to hear!

So what's the preferable turbo to have for this application?

The stocker with an intercooler will get the job done, but a D66 or 38r would do better. But the 38r would require swapping over the entire turbo set-up to the SD style to make it work. Otherwise a modded H2E or t4 mount turbo would run great.

Actually with a good set of 2's or hybrids and a turbo you could hit 450hp pretty easy, but at that point you really need valve springs and head studs. And most likely you would need E-fuel.

Jd,

Your 2's run fine on stock fuel, or do you have them turned down with your chip?

So far they seem to be doing good, but the tunes are for split shots so they aren't tuned correctly. I would say its safe to assume that my fuel pressure drops when i really get into it, and it would be happier with e-fuel. But for now its what i'm running and it works.

Who do you recommend for a tranny and t/c that'll handle this kind of power?

BTS is one of the most common mods for auto trans. Spendy but worth it.

Do you HAVE to have an intercooler to run a DT66 turbo? And would the stock auto tranny handle it??
