E40D Info

Hello- I just picked up a “rolled” 1997 E-350 van w/ 7.3 PS, which I intend to use the chassis as a base for a project vehicle. The van runs and drives nicely- body is just crumpled on top. I plan to put an older extended cab pick-up body on the van frame.

Anyway I’m going to be bugging you guys with a few questions I’m sure you’ve heard 100 times before…

Transmission:

What is the difference between an E40D, and the 4R100?

Are there any specific trans. tricks I need to do from the get-go to make it live longer? Shift Kit? (if there is such a thing for this electronic trans?)

Aftermarket cooler and Spin-on filter? I’ve always had good luck with the B&M #70266

Any Towing Do’s and Don’ts I should know about?

How about transmission reference information- good books or web-sites for the E40D?

Thanks for the help!

Well- it’s going to be a totally custom rig. I didn’t mention it above, but the body is based on a ’70 Chevy Suburban, that I have cut off behind the third door and welded the back of a ’71 pick-up cab on. Custom Club Cab of you will. Then the bed will be sectioned to fit as required. Oh yea, it will be a 4WD conversion also, Dana 60 & divorce mounted NP205. I’ve been collecting parts for a couple of years now (originally including a Cummins 6BT)- the Power Stroke Van just topped it off. Cummins will end up in one of my F600 dump trucks instead.

Big idea here being a modern turn on a classic truck- with diesel power.
