95 psd smoke

hey guys this may seem like a dumb question, but i was wondering how much my diesel should smoke. i have a afe stage 2 intake, superchip programmer, and 4 inch exhaust with the 3 inch down pipe.
i hear a lot of guys talking about how much smoke they dump out and mine you can't see any, even loaded down with your foot to the floor.
i am wondering if my fuel pump is weak, especially since the programmer makes very little difference from stock to race mode.
whats the best way to test fuel pressure under load?
thanks Sam

I never got much smoke with my Superchips tuner. I do with my Edge though, I think the Superchips tunes are pretty conservative though. You could run a fuel pressure gauge, that would give you an idea of where you stand. A good point to remember is that black smoke is just partially burnt fuel, and it's prescence indicates you're putting more fuel to the motor than you can use, so you'll take a bit of a hit in the fuel economy department.

i think smoke is a partial byproduct from unburnt fuel, so less smoke = more fuel burnt

Superchips isn't a big smoke giver on the 7.3's. It'll pour on the 6.0, but if you want smoke from a 7.3 you have to look at something like the edge or better yet custom tunes like TS Performance's chip or the I can't believe i'm saying this Jody's tunes at DP-tuner...
I didn't noticed much smoke with my 7.3 when I had a superchip. I think on the race or high performance mode it just lets you have a little more boost or something....but you can have all the boost the turbo is capable of but without some extra fuel it won't give you any real extra power. Same goes for fuel, a bunch of fuel without the air isn't gonna help......Yes the smoke is unburnt fuel, but once your turbo catches up and push enough air in the combustion chamber that it will burn the all extra fuel the chip is putting in and give you more power.
So, it's about 98% likely that you're fuel system is okay....it's just Superchips...day904x4 on here has one on his 97 and had the same complaint....no smoke

Smoke

My 7.3 didn't smoke with a K&N intake, 3"DP, 4" exhaust, and 6 pos TS chip. When I put in my DBP stage 1 injectors, I can blacken the earth! I have 3 settings that really pour on the smoke. It is fun, but the folks behind me don't care for it, so I mostly roll around on one of the mid settings.

I don't discriminate as to who gets smoked out, heh, even the cops get it sometimes.
