Checking the turbo

I have a 96 F-250 7.3L turbo diesel and was wondering if there is a sure fire way to make sure the turbo is working correctly. I'm pretty sure there is nothing wrong with it but, I would like to know how to check it out and see what kind of shape it's in. Any replies will be greatly appreciated. I've had the truck for 4 years without any troubles but, recently, have had a few thing I've had to replace. I'm at the point where I want to start evaluating everything to insure I don't get stranded somewhere.

pull the intake tube off and look at it and put a boost gauge on
