need some help

i'm sorry that i don't have a picture of this. i went down to the machine shop to check on my engine and they said that after they vated my engine they found this a ball a spring and a plug they got it from somhere near or in the engine valley and the spring was broken I work at ford did some researching and think i found it was a oil pump pressure relief valve am i correct i had good oil pressure at least on my guage what sypmtoms would i experience from this i will replace it but just would like to know if this is what caused my engine to break down my engine would die when cold out of no where but would run fine when warm. the machine shop told me the most likely of my blow by was my egg shaped bores could of this been why my engine was having trouble just curious
