Investment?

Would it be worth my time and money to buy a 97 F350 4x4 with a bad trans and 300,000 miles for $3000. What does it usually cost to rebuilt the engine and trans?

Assuming you have the E40D, if you pay someone to rebuild your trans, I believe you're looking at about $3000. Don't know about the motor -- does it have to be rebuilt?

KBB says the truck is worth $5280 in fair condition, private party value.

id take it! is it a crew cab?

espicially i the motor check out. personally id do a compression test, thats 70% of the story on the motor. a tranny rebuild i have seen $1000 to $3000. depends onwho and what you want. the 350 has a D60 and that alone on worth up to $1k.

if the motor check out id try and talk them down but probably take it either way.

If the motor is healthy go for it. The shop that did my trans told me a rebuild should last 150k. The 7.3 is good for at least 500k. 300k has a lot of life left in it.

Post some more details- mods, issues, body

get the engine checked. definitly do a compression test since you are concerned about it lasting. stay on top of maintenance and they will last at long long time. get what maintenance info you can from the PO. in general if the oil was cared for, and the intake probaly maintained it should be fine. psd's use oil for injection and old oil isnt good for the hpop, ipr or injectors. again, if your compression checks out i would feel good about it. even if i foudn a few wear and tear parts that had to be replaced soon.

Dig deeper. If it was maintained or needs minor maintenance it is worth it.
X-Mas is around the corner. 3000 asking means 2200 cash on the hood to me.
Put the bills on the hood in front of his wife and see if you can pick them up before she does.
