94 F250 XLT 7.3 turbo diesel Powerstroke or IDI?
Hey. I'm looking to buy a 94 F250 turbo diesel. The truck is in really decent shape but the engine doesn't sound like a powerstroke, more like the International 7.3 IDI with a turbo on it. Anyone know if this was a factory option in 94?

It was an option. I think that the rule on 94's is that Powerstroke's are on manual transmissions, and all IDI's got autos. That being said, the Vin code for a powerstroke (the 8th digit) is an F, I'm not sure what IDI diesel is, something else though. In all reality, just pop the hood and look for an injection pump in the valley near the froint and (8) injection lines that would go to the cylinders. The HPOP on the front of the motor (you would be able to see the large, silver reservoir sticking out on the top) is another good way to tell that you have a powerstroke.

Easiest way to check is the 8th number in the VIN a 7.3 IDI (M) 7.3 IDI Turbo (K) 7.3 DI Turbo (Powerstroke) (F)

Turbo IDI's could have both ZF-5 speed, and E4OD auto. 1994 Powerstrokes only had manuals. So if its a manual truck, well it could go either way. If its an auto, automatically its a IDI.
And yes, turbo IDI's were available as an option in 1993-1994. 1994.5 was the first year the powerstroke was optioned, 1995 powerstroke was the only diesel option as IDI's were phased out. |
