1996 Fsuperduty

my neighbor has a 96 Fsuperduty he wants to sell the gvwr is 15500 and the engine says 7.3 turbo nowhere does it say powerstroke so I am assuming they were using up the 7.3 non powerstroke engines in these heavy duty trucks, does that sound right? if i needed parts for the motor is that the engine family I would get them for? its a manual tranny do you guys know which model it would be? any info on this truck you guys could give me would be appreciated.

If it is a Ford with a 7.3 from 94.5 and up till 03.5, it is a powerstroke unless the engine has been swapped out.

15,500 gvw is for a 250? every 350 ive seen is 10,000 this truck is an early 450 or maybe even a 550

Whoops, sorry about that, I was looking at the wrong weight ratings. 15k would be a commercial 1-ton or greater, so 450 would be about right. Though any drivetrain parts can come from the OBS powerstrokes.

I'll get the vin tonight, but as far as you guys know it should have a powerstoke in it? They guy thinks someone changed the tranny out its a 4sp with granny low, should it have a 5sp in it?

sounds like the engine and trans have been changed...if it's a powerstroke it will have a hpop with rubber or braided lines (2) running to the heads. If it's a 7.3 turbo indirect injected engine...it will have an injection pump where the hpop would be and it will have 8 metal lines running to external injectors mounted near the valve covers. I worked for a brick mason years ago that had an 89' f-450 superduty...it had a regular 5 speed as well as i remember...no granny.

Its apowerstroke with a 5sp neighors not sure what he has, I'm gonna try and fire it up today and see whjat it runs like.

well I brought it home this afternoon, it has a loud popping noise coming out of the intake, I'm hopeing this is the problem.

mine is doing the exact same thing. I ended up paying $1000 for the truck so I dont think I'll get hurt even if I need to have the heads done.
