Full turbo forward intake?

I was looking at diy intakes and I noticed all of them still leave the cast aluminum piece right in front of the rubber elbow coming of the turbo. I noticed the hose running off the intake piece into the valve cover while replacing my glow plugs. Is there anyway to plug the valve cover or plumb it into another intake? Or is the metal piece something that Must stay. Just seems like it might be something of a restriction in the airflow to the turbo.

Cut it out and put in a draft tube..
