complete rebuild
ok so heres what i've got goin
i have a 97 crew cab the body isn't to bad in my mind but i paint cars all day so i've seen worse. the problem i'm having is the truck is nickle and diming me to death! water pump here power steering there clutch over here and then the alternator some of you have probably been in this situation before. ok so my newest expense is my valves or the turbo unsure yet but the motor has just shy of 187,000 but it runs like a top besides the horrible knock from either the valves or the turbo. i love the truck to death but i would also love it if it ran as well as i know it could. so my newest plan is to rebuild the motor. i found a kit for around 1,300 and a set of new heads for 900. take in mind a live in a town where everyone owns a diesel and i have a few hands to help here. i also looked into rebulding the injectors to 160cc and swappin in a banks turbo and intercooler. i just wanna know if any one knows if im gettin in way over my head or if i should fix the valves sell it and upgrade to a newer 7.3 or a 6.4 not a fan of the 6.0 due to the injectors. any inpute would be helpful and if you can list me some reasons for loving the 6.0 i might even consider that as a new truck option as well. I would just rebuild what you got but stay away from the Banks stuff.

i've heard good things about them but i also heard the 7.3 was the best of ford but i'm a little sceptical any sugnificant mods for the 6.4 that would be worth getting right off the bat?

Look up Swamps Diesel and look at there turbos. A H2E would be my choice though.

my buddy has an h2e and the truck is wicked fast but he also paid a pretty penny for it but for the best i guess you have to pay a little more right?

im running an h2e and i love it! great turbo. runs real cool with my 230cc injectors.

I would say keep the truck, its far less expensive than a 6.4. upgrade your injectors, your HPOP and turbo. find out where the knock is coming from. you can even rebuild your current turbo if you dont go beyond stage 1 injectors.
The knock may just be an injector. DIY stage 1's are inexpensive, i think you can even put on an SD turbo, dont forget to replace your glows with motorcraft ones while your in there. and might as well upgrade your glow relay to the stancor as well. these are great truck, and unless the p*ss has run out of it, 187k is nothing for these motors. there are guys here who have started modding at over 300k. |
