Has anyone made their own skid plates?

Not the cheap crap you can buy in in the stores....I am mean "real" skid plates.

I ask becuase I dont think the stuff I buy in the stores will be able to support the weight of my truck when falling onto a rock or anything sharp/pointy
(plus it would give me something to tinker with while sitting around looking for a job)

I was thinking wouldnt it be neat to fab up some skid plates out of 1/4in or 1/2in plate steel and armor the majority of my undercarriage.
Anyone ever tried it?
pix?
