torque converter bad ????

I have a 1997 f-450 with a fairly new trans. I bought this truck just over 6 months ago and the trans looked very clean so i figure it was replaced not long before that.
It seems like the torque converter stays locked in when I come to a stop. It does not happen all of the time and has just started to do it. It will make the engine die. Is there anything I need to look for before instead of just changing the converter.

my 95 350 does the same sometime when stopped at a light, have a lot of issues in reverse as well. Was in the shop (a really crappy one I won't ever be going back to) 3 times and still leaks, still locks up randomly. Seems now like no matter how topped off I keep the fluid, it has a mind of it's own.
