94 F250 torque converter question

A mechanic I'm not familiar with just told me that when he replaces my torque converter ($6-700 by itself) he should also go in and open up the transmission and put in a master rebuild kit, jacking the price to the $2000 range, just in case the bad converter damaged anything in there. $1300 seems like a hell of a lot of just-in-case money. Thoughts?

What kind of problems were you having that is causing the converter replacement?
