ZF5 hanging around

I lost the DM Flywheel recently and bought the South Bend SMF kit, when I went to start the removal (first time for pulling a trans) I noticed a crack from near the starter bulge up about 4" before I couldn't see it anymore. I also came to find all bolts except on the cracked portion were finger tight. I can't locate the top bolt on the passenger side, although I could see a bolt of appropriate size trapped between the exhaust and trans.
The question; is there any hope of welding the trans back into one piece and have it live a long fulfilling life? I live about 15 miles back off the paved road so it endures considerable abuse. What would cause the bolts to back out like that? truck has 305k miles, motor was replaced at about 200k by previous owner (reman from Ford).

I would weld it. But make sure you take it to someone who is familiar with aluminum and that the mating surface has to be perfectly flat.

Trucks and parts............

Mine has been welded in the same place sometime before I bought the truck. The truck is used to plow snow, tow, and carries a 3 yd. salt/sand spreader in the winter with no issues at all. Recently my buddy rebuilt the trans (new synchros and bearings) and the case was split and put back together also with no issues.
