OD light flashing common fixes and scanner recommendations

Hello all, I just got back from Afghanistan and am loving the f350 automatic 4wd CC my wife bought me. Anyway OD light started flashing tonight. I have searched and read. Many post allude to easy fixes to check first, What are they? To check the codes where can you go? Does NAPA have a reader? Also if one were to buy a scanner which one would you get?

The easy fix is a new transmission, just 6 bolts. Most autoparts stores scanners won't read the codes on these trucks. Auto Enginuity is the scanner I use.
