1997 f350 while driving tranny slip out gear

hello
i have a 1997 f350 with auto tranny
I don't haul
I don't drive it so much, a few time a months
It was running well without a problem

until..
last time, while I was driving the tranny slipped out of gear and i pushed the gas pedal and only the rev went up (it felt like the tranny went back to neutral but the stick shift was still in drive)
I had to pull over, without turning off the engine, i put it back in park and then to drive. After that it drove again.

Then a second time on the freeway (same trip) it happened again, I took an exit, stopped, shifted to 2nd to keep driving slowly and then to drive &
it worked again without problem for about 20 miles until I got home.

I haven't driven it since then.

Going down the interstate mine did the same thing. I had tightend the shift lever on the steering coulum (2 torx bit screws loose) and never rechecked for the shift lever adjustment down on the transmission side of the cable. I pulled over and readj it and fine the rest of the way. Yours may have an adjustment issue. It could be trans issue itself to but the adj is an easy fix if thats what is causing it. Streched cable will have the same issue as well. I will post more on this if mine gets worse though. Any other thoughts fellas?????
