Problem Replacing Shifter Boot

I am trying to install a new shift boot on my truck because the plastic trim and inner boot are shot and its ridiculously loud in cab.

I ordered part (F5tz7277a) which is the black outer boot and thick, white inner boot, but when i removed my old boot I found the inner boot was black and not attached to the outer cover.

I was able to remove the four screws on the black plastic trim and the two bolts on the shifter lever, so the shifter arm is detached from the tranny, but I am unsure how to remove the old rubber shift boot over the square shaped shifter end (where it bolts to the tranny). I am sure I can rip the old boot off, but how do I get the new boot over the square part of the shifter arm?

I have searched and searched many forums and actually found a couple installation guides. They all show how to remove the 4 screws and 2 bolts on the shift arm, but they all gloss over how exactly to remove and attach the new rubber boot.

I am not sure if I have the wrong part bc the new boot only has a very small opening thru the white piece and I dont see how exactly I can get the old rubber outter shifter boot off and the new one installed.

I would really appreciate any help with this.

That should be the right part. The new boot (both sections) should stretch enough to allow the shifter handle to slide through (you can always lube it a little with silicon spray). It wasn't all that bad when I did my 94's. I just put the boot assembly on the main shifter handle part and then attached that to the stub on the tranny and then screwed down the trim to the floor. Probably not that helpful, but ... Cheers!
