transmission gone??

i have a 95 with the e40d. i turned off highway onto my neighborhood street started to give it fuel when it acted like a boat motor/prop coming out of the water.it reved but didnt go anywhere then it caught and started driving again, but repeated this 2-3 times, and cut off as i coasted to my driveway. it wouldnt start. i had to pull it in the yard. now it wont start, and soundslike starter is dragging or in a bind. does anyone have any ideas?

Can you turn the engine by hand?

Did you hear a click from either the starter relay on the fender or the solenoid down on the starter?

it is the flexplate......center broke out of it!!!!!! engine spins by hand, had inspection cover off and watched. also had checked fluids in engine and tranny prior to pulling insp. cover off, both looked fine. i feel A LOT BETTER, but now, is it possible to drop tranny and transfer case on the ground and replace it myself??? or do i need to send it to a shop????
