Trans OD what is normal

Ok, Got a 1997 OBS 7.3 and i would guess it to be the E40D trans as it is an auto. Friend told me to verify it does not freewheel down hill, so this morning i went down the hill and engaged OD. RPMs up, Speedo goes down, seems right to me.
Coming home and i have to take detour. Detour around the entire wonderful canyon, down a road with 400 foot drop offs, have not been on in years,,, anyways, coming to a corner, i engage OD and WOW! no go slow anymore. In fact i have a section of my seat now missing from the truck, travels with me forever. Of course, i manual downshift and it works, but should the OD also do something or is that just a pretty button on a lever? Where should i start if this is wrong, as i am certain it is.
