Help with reverse
I just bought a 1996 f250 crew cab 4x4 with the 7.3 and the auto transmission. When you put it into reverse it just sits there and sometimes after it sits for a couple seconds before it finally goes into gear other wise you have to give it some gas and then it will move. I cant really tell if its really slipping or not yet but as soon as you get out of the gas it feels like it goes back out of gear. Is there anything that would cause this or will i be needing a rebuild soon.

Fluid clean and bright? Tranny shop can put a pressure gauge to it to see if the front pump is pressurizing the box enough. Can also be a misaligned PRiNDL selector. Does it engage quicker if you slightly move the selector back and forth?
Since the truck is new to you a total fluid/filter swap for the truck is in order. Who know when it was done last. |

Tried messing with the shifter it doesnt really help at all. If the pump was bad wouldnt drive be the same way?

Also wondering, does the reverse selection hang every time you go into reverse or only the first time of the day? Hangs for the first time but the rest of the day it works as quickly as you'd expect? A weak pump can hang on the reverse selection because of a sticking reverse valve or check ball. It has to build to a certain pressure before the valve or check-ball moves. Remember you use your forward valves tens to hundreds of times a day driving, I only use my reverse once a day (if all I do is go to work and home again). It always hangs the first time I ask for reverse but the rest of the day it operates like normal.

Im not really sure. I havnt started driving the truck yet im still waiting to sell my current DD. Would one of those Transmission additives like seafoam be a good i dea if it is a sticky check valve. Even after you give it some gas in reverse and it moves it seems like as soon as you go back to iddle you have to rev it a tad for it to hop back in gear or start moving
