Shifting issues
So I finally got around to towing my first serious load after owning the truck a year and a half. Had a 40ft+ enclosed trailer with a roughly 3500lb truck in there and about 2k lbs worth of parts.
Anyways the motor handled the load fine but the trans kept skipping third gear and went into 4th especially when going up a decent sized bridge. O/D was off. When not towing/hauling anything I can drive up to 2k RPM and it shifts ok, when it hits 3rd gear and I can floor it and it immediately shifts into 4th and bogs down then goes into OD. So it feels like 5 gears total. I was told this was "sort of" normal and I would need a tuner to be able to get the shifting just right. When I floor it from a dead stop it skips second and goes right into 3rd. Fluid level is fine and I haven't hooked a scanner up to it yet to see what the computer is telling it to do while driving. Just seeing if anyone has any ideas before I really look into it. Thanks |

Mine did this. Mine didn't use 1st unless I selected it manually with a hard launch. Started in 2nd and dug through. This is why Ford eventually went with the 5 and 6 r100. Same final gear but more climbing gears to keep the motor in its power range. Chip it and choose your own shift points. In tow mode mine now uses "6" speeds out of my modded e40d. 1-2-3-3od-4-4od.
