need advice overdrive acting funny not flashing

OK so when i go out to my truck( 1997 powerstroke auto 4x4) I turn the key to on position and o/d off light on shifter lights up. Start the truck and it remains lit. If i push the button once nothing happens. But if i push the button repeaditly sometimes a dozen times and sometimes for a minute straight finally it will go off and o/d works normally. Once driving sometimes i can go 50 miles with everything good but then sometimes ill be cruising along and the light will come on and the truck will downshift. I again hit the button repeaditly for a up to a min and then it will go back off with everything back to normal. I am so lost need advice.

Sounds like a problem with the shift lever, alot of times the wire inside wears through and causes problems. You can OHM it out and see if there is a problem.

Could be brake lights... Sounds to me like the OD solenoid. Shifting in the E4OD is completely computer controlled based on pressures measured in the case by the Solenoid Pack. Also check harness plugged into trans, this can sometimes rub and would be grounding out somewhere.

I have the E4OD service and repair manual i can email to you... pm your add...

The switch on the end of the shifter is easy to replace. Aknife blade pops the outer ring off and the switch just pulls out. If that doesn';t fix it , the shifter handle has to be replaced. The wires rub into.
