Yes another tranny thread

Well I have read a few pevious threads on the E4od, but I am tired of reading. So here is what I got, well my son has. '97 F250HD, 4x4. The truck starts out fine in first gear, seems to shift to second and gets stuck unless you slap the go pedal to the floor. Then it seems to give up on second and go to third, then normal to fourth. No overdrive So before we take her into the tranny shop and spend three thousand on a rebuild and buildup, what are your thoughts out there? Could it just be as easy as a solinoid pack? Clogged filter? Shorted wire? Guess I should mention that the od light is blinking, and he does have it chipped Maybe take the chip out and see if it resets? Oh yes, the fluid was that beautiful brown we all hate to see. I think he has 230,000 some miles on her, I have 280 and some change on mine and have no problems even with pulling 12,000 lbs almost daily. Just after some thoughts, trying to spend 3 grand somewhere else if we can. Thanks in advance for any input
